Description

Exxon Mobil Corporation, one of the world's largest multinational oil and gas corporations, has a complex history rooted in the merger of two major companies, Exxon and Mobil. Exxon was founded as Standard Oil of New Jersey in 1882, while Mobil traces its roots back to the Standard Oil Company of New York (Socony) established in 1911. The merger of Exxon and Mobil took place in 1999, forming Exxon Mobil Corporation. The company operates in various segments, including exploration, production, refining, and marketing of oil and gas products. The Exxon Mobil logo and brand have become globally recognized symbols in the energy industry. ExxonMobil obtained a federal trademark registration for “EXXON” on November 10, 1970. The iconic interlocking X's in red and blue have been associated with the company for decades.

Exxon Mobil has been involved in a number of trademark disputes in the past years. In 2022, ExxonMobil Corporation successfully compelled a shopkeeper in Tripura, India, who sold automobile oils, to remove the term 'Mobil' from its business name. The legal action took place in the Delhi High Court, where ExxonMobil argued that the use of 'Mobil' in the shop's name constituted trademark infringement. The court ruled in favor of ExxonMobil, directing the Tripura shop to pay Rs 3 lakh as litigation costs. In a separate trademark infringement lawsuit filed in 2022 in the Florida Southern District Court, Exxon Mobil Corporation took legal action against online retailers. The lawsuit, represented by Nelles Kostencki PLLC and Pirkey Barber PLLC, accused the online retailers of selling counterfeit Mobil and Delvac products.
