Generally, it is advisable to tie the ownership of a trademark to the entity that will be using it in commerce. This often means applying for a trademark in the name of a business entity. This choice also makes it easier to carry out trademark ownership transfers later.

There are, however, specific cases where registering a trademark as an individual might be preferable. For example, due to the length of the registration process, budding entrepreneurs might want to file a trademark in advance while they are still setting up their company.
