A trademark can be owned by an individual, a legal entity, or an association. In addition, a trademark can be self-filed or filed by a representative.

To-be owners can submit a trademark application in their domicile by themselves; however, if you want to register a trademark in a different country, you need to seek representation from an attorney/law firm with a license in the given state.

Some intellectual property offices, e.g. in the UK, require foreign applicants to either have a postal address within the country or a representative with an address in the country for the purpose of communication with the office.
